During Ideas To Go’s company meeting in San Francisco last week, we discovered a local celebrity known as The Bushman. For the uninitiated, The Bushman bides his time along Fisherman’s Wharf by hiding behind a few branches and shaking them as people wander by—and in turn, scaring the tuna salad out of them. Crowds gather to watch him ply his unconventional trade—often including his former victims. Interestingly, this seems to be no run-of-the-mill busker. According to his Wikipedia entry, The Bushman has built his act into a lucrative brand—earning up to $60,000 in a “good year,” as well as finding top billing in numerous articles, YouTube videos, Flickr streams and even a documentary. This leads us to nominate The Bushman as one of San Francisco’s real innovators—because, in the end, we wish we thought of that.
